KDF-NUS Research Fund
The Research Fund has been a programme that has been ongoing to find a cure for and prevention of kidney failure due to diabetes. The programme has recently managed to make headway at the National University of Singapore with a team of two NUS researchers – Dr Gan Shu Uin and Professor Lee K O, under the leadership of Sir Roy Calne, a pioneer in organ transplantation. Together with the collaborators in Egypt, the research team recently had some surprising success using human cells to cure diabetes in mice.

Adopt-A-Patient
At KDF, we focus on the needy patients stricken with kidney failure in the society. Our patients form the lowest 10% of the income group in Singapore. Even within this 10%, we have patients who are unable to support themselves financially.

The Adopt-A-Patient programme targets this specific group of patients. These patients can barely get by with what little they have, especially when they have other family members to support. In drastic cases, patients have zero household income and depend only on public assistance. Even with medical insurance, many of them are still unable to afford the subsidised dialysis fees provided by KDF. Others do not even have the benefit of insurance to cover the costs of their fees.

For more information on our Adopt-A-Patient programme, please contact Ms Samantha Png at 6559 2650 or email Samantha.png@kdf.org.sg.

Atacama Crossing Charity Drive
Ms Felicia Ong is one of the competitors of the 4 Deserts; the world's leading rough-country endurance footrace series where competitors will race in the most inhospitable climates and formidable landscapes, carrying their own equipment and food and are only provided with drinking water and a place in a tent each night to rest. Joining the Atacama Crossing held in March 2012 as a first-time 4 Deserts competitor, she is making this milestone of her life more memorable and meaningful by adopting KDF as her beneficiary for her fundraising efforts.

Aiming to raise $10,000 for KDF, she believes that this fundraising project is her way to help KDF in its mission to provide subsidised dialysis treatments and medication for their needy patients.

The KDF-NUS Research Fund
Since 2007, KDF has been supporting Research Work in finding a cure for Diabetes Mellitus, which accounts for more than 50% of new kidney failure cases each year. Every dollar donated to the KDF-NUS Research Fund has been approved for a dollar-for-dollar matching grant from the government. The matching grant from the government would be endowed in perpetuity, creating income annually for the Research Fund. 2011 KDF Charity Icon "Golden Dragon"
For this Lunar Seventh Month celebration, KDF's Chinese Community Committee presents to you KDF's 2011 auspicious Charity Icon, the "Golden Dragon" named after a famous Chinese idiom that originated from a Tang Dynasty poem. According to the "Chinese Idiom Dictionary", the dragon horse; a horse which looks like a dragon signifies a healthy and vigorous spirit of life. Even in the face of danger or uncertainty, an optimistic energetic spirit is still present in this mystical creature. The "Golden Dragon" projects vigour, health, sturdiness and good luck. The fine details of the dragon scale, whiskers, horsehair showcases the superb workmanship of this statue. Symbolizing progress, the "Golden Dragon" also represents prosperity to your career and businesses. We hope that KDF's "Golden Dragon" Icon will not only bring luck and fortune to all generous donors but also presents another lease of life to our needy patients.
